Rapid prototyping in Devonport

In mid-December, I needed a way to transport pressure-washing gear locally - using a car to perform the first local job didn’t seem necessary and was counter to my eco-friendly aspiration (local service by local, provided sustainably). The kids’ beach trolley came to mind, so I piled it with the necessary equipment - it fit the bill as an inexpensive prototype. It worked, the smiles and greetings along the way were welcome.

Over the Christmas / New Year’s holiday break, a purpose-built trailer using wheels and other parts salvaged from a kindly placed free roadside bike took shape (thanks thoughtful Vauxhall Rd neighbour - you even pumped up the tyres 😊). The swing-arm, wheel drop-outs, and tow-ball had already been ordered from Cycle Trailers NZ Ltd in mid-December in anticipation - the break gave sufficient opportunity for creativity to flow.

On the day after New Year’s, the purpose-built trailer along with a re-geared 😅(1:1) steel single-speed using cranks and a newish bottom-bracket from another donor bike was completed, tested, and will be deployed to a job site tomorrow.

Hoping this will be the perfect pre-work/post-work fitness routine for 2021, in addition to being the right thing for the environment and Lake Road congestion. Next up: signwriting :).

p.s. I enjoy building cargo trailers - if you’d like one for non-passenger purposes, but don’t want to build your own, need help building your own, etc., I may be able to help. You can drop me a line here.
